Fishing boat rescued off Sydney

FOUR people whose boat sank yesterday off Sydney were found clinging to an esky and rescued after setting off an EPIRB.

Two men and two children were fishing about five miles off Sydney heads when they noticed smoke coming from the boat's engine and water gushing onboard.

According to news reports, the quick-thinking skipper fitted life jackets to the children, set off the GME EPIRB (electronic beacon), and jumped in the water holding an esky.

Rescuers were notified of the exact position of the four people in the water and successfully performed the rescue.

News reports said one of the men suffered minor burns. Authorities praised the efforts of the skipper for carrying and deploying the proper emergency safety equipment.
